Introducing Evidence Essays

Presenting Evidence Essays Presenting Evidence Essay Presenting Evidence Essay So as to introduce the taped explanations against Sanders. the declarant ( Blair ) must be inaccessible as a source blending to Fed. R. Evid. 804. The announcements by Blair pre-winter under a rejection to the talk guideline. Taken care of. R. Evid. 804 ( B ) ( 3 ) . which gives that when a declarant is inaccessible as a source. explanations against contribution are non barred by gossip. At the point when an indicting official looks to introduce grounds of an explanation that inculpates the denounced. a figure of councils necessitate that announcement be against the declarants inclusion and that there be documentation. Variables that courts take a gander at for documentation incorporate inspiration. general character of the declarant. regardless of whether more than one individual heard the announcement. regardless of whether it was made precipitously and the planning of the statement and connection between the declarant and the source. Here. Blairs proclamation was most likely against his contribution as it could expose him to condemnable obligation each piece great as Drum sanders. With respect to documentation. Blair did non hold a solid inspiration to lie since he did non cognize he was chatting with a surreptitious specialist. He accepted that he was conversing with an imminent inclusion in the falsifying methodology. At the point when these sorts of explanations are presented. Showdown Clause issues start. Under the sixth amendment. a charged has the privilege to confront the source against him. The courts have moved in their assault to the investigation sing the showdown proviso. In Ohio v. Roberts. the Court rewarded the request of when the Confrontatiion Clause precludes the introduction of out of council explanations against a condemnable suspect. The Court made a constancy preliminary and adapted the tolerability of noise grounds on whether it fell under a solidly established gossip exemption or bears particularized warrants of reliability . Solidly established prohibitions included stimulated vocalizations. proclamations refering clinical diagnosings. what's more, co-plotter explanations. On the off chance that the talk articulation did non fall inside an ardently established rejection. particularized warrants of trustiness may give it to come access. The announcement must hold adequate grounds of reliability. The Roberts assault was reprimanded as obscure and lacking to secure the defendant’s rights. The Court in Crawford v. Washington dismissed the Roberts assault. expressing its pliant assault oftentimes neglects to secure against paradigmatic showdown infringement . The Crawford council clarified the preliminary in Roberts is excessively wide in that it applies a similar way of investigation whether or non the talk comprises of ex parte declaration. which much of the time outcomes in close protected assessment in examples that are far expelled from the core worries of the provision. Also. the Court said it is. at a similar clasp. too much tight in that it concedes articulations that do stay of antique parte declaration upon an insignificant assurance of trustworthiness. Under this examination. 804 ( B ) ( 3 ) . an announcement against association. does non fall inside an immovably established special case so the court must go to whether it has particular warrants of trustiness. The Court in Crawford ventured off from the Roberts assault and on the other hand made another way of thinking after examining the Sixth Amendment. They first said that it simply applies to observers against the charged thus. gossip explanations simply raise worries with the Confrntation Clause when a declarant Acts of the Apostless like a witness. A witness was characterized as one who bore declaration. what's more, the council received a separation among tribute and non tribute articulations. The court in Crawford did non put out what comprises as tribute or non tribute. however, expressed that the Government can introduce tribute proclamations where the declarant affirms during a test. hearing. or on the other hand where the speculate had a front opportunity to cross investigate the declarant and the declarant must be inaccessible. While tribute proclamations were non unequivocally characterized. the Court gave that tribute explanations about ever incorporate ex parte in-council d eclaration or its utilitarian proportional that is material, for example, sworn statements tutelary investigations. foremost declaration that the suspect couldn't interrogate or comparable pretrial explanations Thus toing nontestimonial proclamations. the Court reasoned that Where not tribute proclamations are at issue. it is conflicting with the Framers configuration to bear the cost of the States flexibleness in their improvement of noise law-as does Roberts. also, every piece would an assault that excluded such explanations from Confrontation Clause investigation entirely. In this manner. where non tribute explanations are concerned. the reliability investigation in Ohio v. Roberts despite everything applies. Consequently. the issue of whether the Confrontation condition will bar this declaration relies upon whether the announcements by Blair are tribute or non tribute. In Davis. the council went farther to isolate whether articulations are tribute or non-tribute in the class of a 911 call question. In view of Crawford and Davis. representations of non-tribute proclamations incorporate explanations are made to choose an exigency. are an excited vocalization. or on the other hand made mostly for the goal of acquiring clinical mediation or diagnosing. Be that as it may, articulations made in a more antagonistic puting. for example, starter hearing. prior to a sweeping jury. at a previous test. or then again police questions. are tribute. Tribute proclamations typically set up past conduct. It would look the announcements. estimated from the situation of the declarant ( Blair ) were non tribute since they were non made for the purposes of attempting to area what occurred in the days of old or for the goal of back uping what Blair thought was a reality finding or accusative method. In add-on. Blair was non doing the announcement in a proper continuing and had no ground to accept the announcement would be utilized against him at a condemnable continuing. Where non tribute articulations are concerned. the sixth amendment encounter proviso request does non use and the court has set up that Roberts is non dead. Along these lines. the steadfastness of these announcements would require to be examined. Under the Roberts basis. Blair’s comments. despite the fact that against contribution. make non fall under an immovably established avoidance and would non hold been acceptable except if there were particularized warrants of trustiness. Discovering constancy in an explanation that is against declarants association yet inculpates another people can be hard in light of the fact that courts have concerns, for example, regardless of whether it is an explanation that reinforces the blamed spot or on the off chance that it is looking to switch implication. Here. there were proclamations made that could implicate Blair. inclining towards trustworthy. In add-on. Blair had no ground to accept he was being exposed to watch question. Be that as it may. in the event that the council for some ground found the announcement declaration. Showdown condition anaylsis would come in. This would require the declarant to be inaccessible and the charged have had a chance to confront the source against him. While Blair is inaccessible. Sanders neer got an opportunity to cross look at Blair. so the announcement would be prohibited.

Things fall Apart and Okonkwo; A Classic Greek Tragedy and...

Things Fall Apart and Okonkwo; A Classic Greek Tragedy and Tragic Hero Both the novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, and its main character Okonkwo closely adhere to the definitions of a classic Greek tragedy and a typical tragic hero. First of all, Okonkwo is a tragic hero by the Greek definition. While Okonkwo wasn’t born to a nobleman or king (as the definition of a tragic hero states), he was a man of high status and respect in his community, as Obierika stated near the end of the book. â€Å"That man was one of the greatest men in Umuofia.† (Achebe 208). Second, the novel follows the format of a Greek tragedy by presenting Okonkwo as a mixed character. He was a mixed character in that he was neither thoroughly good nor thoroughly†¦show more content†¦Okonkwo knew how to kill a man’s spirit.† (26). His dismissiveness towards this man is just one example of his hubris. The next part of a Greek tragedy, is the tragic hero’s moment of recognition of â€Å"the truth of his situation and/or of his identit y.† Okonkwo’s moment of recognition came when he realized that his people weren’t going to fight back against the white men and their religion. The arrival of these foreigners and their strange religion had brought the death of his clan and way of life with them. â€Å"Okonkwo was deeply grieved. And it was not just a personal grief. He mourned for the clan, which he saw breaking up and falling apart, and he mourned for the warlike men of Umuofia, who had so unaccountably become soft like women.† (183). At this point in the story of Okonkwo, he realizes the grim truth about the fate of his culture and people. Finally, Things Fall Apart, the story of Okonkwo, adheres to the model of a classic Greek tragedy in that it has a final katharsis, or â€Å"tragic representation of suffering and defeat that leaves an audience feeling, not depressed, but relieved and even elevated,† (Greek tragedy and tragic hero explanation sheet). Things Fall Apart’s katharsis, or emotional relief came when Okonkwo killed himself. Although such an event may seem like something that would make the reader feel defeated and depressed, it was through his suicide that Okonkwo made one final protest or stand against the white man. Haemorrhoids can be external and internal and it can be diagnosed by the physical examination by doctor or a digital rectal test. There are some existing medicines for the problem and includes ointments, pads and other lotions to relieve itching. There are some surgical and non-surgical treatments a vailable to prevent and cure Haemorrhoids. The trend shows that the number of people suffering from haemorrhoids doubled between 2008 and 2013 and it affects 75% of the people throughout the life (Haemorrhoids Authority, 2014). The company is ready to launch and promote the product for which an advertisement campaign has to be designed so that awareness for the product can be created among public. An advertising campaign is a set of activities which are used to share a single idea and theme. Various media channels are used here to share a message for the treatment of Haemorrhoids and the details about the medication launched by the company. The objective of this advertising campaign is to share the information about new medicines manufactured by the company and to make people aware. It is to communicate the benefits of the medicine and to persuade customers to switch to this medicine for better medicine. The message for medicines could be communicated through various media channels to the sufferers and to persuade them to buy the medicines for relief from Haemorrhoids. These messages should be communicated to the target audience who are either the existing patients of Haemorrhoids or the ones who might get the problem like the people getting aged, pregnant ladies, the ones who have problem of constipation or other potential customers (Riss, et al., 2012). To create awareness among the target audience, first of all, the audience will be identified and then appropriate media will be selected for spreading the information and raise awareness about the medication. The appropriate media might be the digital media, print media or other options. Different factors have to be considered while choosing the appropriate media for spreading the information and running the advertisement. These factors are time, cost or complexity of the message which is to be spread. Also, the distance between the target audience and the company also matters when media channel is been selected. For e.g. person sitting overseas cannot be reached through pamphlets and local newspaper advertisements. They have to be addressed through digital media (Kelley, Sheehan and Jugenheimer, 2015). Fixed position should be adopted for this advertisement. It means that running the advertisement on fixed channel of television at a fixed time and during the show or on the same position in the newspaper daily/ weekly, on same page number. It is because it is something related to health and fixed positions will be decided as per the suitability of the people suffering from Haemorrhoids. For e.g. the advertisements can be published weekly in the health page of a newspaper. It will be memorised by potential customers easily and the company can easily make its place in the market. It will create an ease for the people to identify the details and information whenever they need to. There are different costs which will be associated with this advertisement campaign of medicines like printing costs, content cost, and graphics and designing cost, cost for generating the information and designing the advertisement (Parente and Strausbaugh-Hutchinson, 2014). A budget is prepared below which shows different costs of advertising campaign of medicines: Activities of advertisement campaign Costs Designing of advertisement $1400 Media of advertisement Newspapers $2000 Social media $50 (Basic fee) Television $4000 $6050 Content cost $450 Total $7400 It is important to negotiate with the media vehicles like newspapers, television and social media to get the specific schedule and rates on which advertisements can run. This will not hamper the budget of the campaign and will be profitable to the organisation. There are factors which should be taken into consideration while negotiating for media vehicle. These factors are the media rates, successful rate of media, competitive pressures, target of advertisement campaign and time. The information about the medicine, its contents, its benefits, details and history of company, potential customers and the budget will be shared with the advertiser by the company while determining the media contract for the advertisement (Anantha and Krishnan, 2010). There is some legal and ethical consideration which has to be taken care when establishing final media contract. The company has to take care that no unfair means are taken while establishing a final media contract. Fair contract should be made and all the laws related to it should be followed. Copyrights and trademarks are to be taken care of and confidentiality should be maintained. Ethics like trust and privacy should be maintained (Moriarty, et. al., 2014) There are different ways to monitor the advertising campaign. Some of these ways includes monitoring sales, reviewing the goals, comparing the footfall of customers with the previous numbers. The things to monitor in advertisement campaign are sales, number of queries, footfall of customers, the customers reaction, progress in work and sales; relationship with customers, etc. while monitoring the advertising campaign, no unfair means should be adopted. Correct numbers should be recorded to maintain trust and fairness. Some legal considerations are maintaining the fairness in promotions and following the guidelines (Rice and Atkin, 2012). Success in the advertising campaign of medicines for Haemorrhoids means that the medicines are purchased by people and they are giving positive reviews about the medicine. When the traffic on the websites and advertisements increases, it means that advertisement is successful and deriving great number of sales to the company. The process of production

Introduction A strong relationship exists between labour and the process of production. Man has always provided the necessary manpower that is required to transform raw materials into finished products. This manpower can either be in the form of skilled or unskilled labour. However, to ensure that the process of production is effective and efficient, a lot of considerations have to be put in place.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The process of production specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The production of goods and services has experienced a lot of changes over time. Before the 18th century, the process of production purely relied of craft workmanship. This was highly seen on cottage industries during the industrial revolution. However, with the increase in demand for goods, some developments were to be seen in the production industry. These came in through the introduction of scientific management in the process of production by Taylor (Boradkar 103). He introduced the concept of division of labour and cooperation among employees. This was a key move that led to the development of the assembly line of goods. Fordism led to further development of this concept and hence the mass production of goods came by. However, after the Second World War, production companies begun to lay a lot of emphasis on customization of goods to meet the specific needs of individual customers. This is operational up to the present date. This paper will therefore summarise the various phases of the evolution of the production process and highlight on key issues that play a critical role in this development. The evolution of production The hit of the industrial revolution in Europe and America in the 18th century led to a lot of changes and advancement in the production industry. Goods could now be manufactured at a faster rate, with high precision and meet the rising demand of the population. During the early days of the revolution, a lot of emphasis was laid on the physical strength that man put in the production process. As a result, the volumes of production were low and industries were owned by individual. The car manufacturing industry begun late in the 19th century. By 1920s, the demand for automobiles had increased. At this time, manufactures modified their production to meet the needs and demands of their customers. This included improved weather and safety protection, effectiveness and efficiency, better models and affordable prices (Boradkar 109). To achieve all these, standardised mass production had to put adapted. This replaced the American System of production. Prior to this, the manufacture of vehicles was not standardised. Few individuals with specific skills were involved in the production process. These individuals were highly paid and could not be affected by capital forces. As a result, the units produced were low, the demand of vehicles was low and cars were sold at high prices.Advertising Looking for essay on history? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More In 1911, Frederick Taylor introduced the scientific management that emphasised on division of labour and employee cooperation. This concept ensured a faster rate of employee recruitment, increased production and reduction in the cost of production. Fordism, later on expounded on this idea and introduced the concept of mass production. This concept emphasised on the increased use of machinery in the production process. This reduced the amount of manpower required and increased the rate of production and its efficiency. As a result, more vehicles were released into the market at a cheaper price. At this point, capitalism played a critical role in the automobile industry, a factor that is existent up to the present day. Conclusion A lot of developments have occurred in the process of production. This includes the introduction of scientific management and incorporation of technology in the process of production. As a result, high quality goods are now produced at a faster rate thus being able to meet the demand and needs of customers. Work Cited Boradkar, Prasad. Compare the heights of girls and boys in year 8 and the sixth form Essays

Compare the heights of girls and boys in year 8 and the sixth form Essays Compare the heights of girls and boys in year 8 and the sixth form Essay Compare the heights of girls and boys in year 8 and the sixth form Essay The purpose of this exercise is to compare the heights of girls and boys in year 8 and the sixth form, in an attempt to show the following. That in year 8, girls and boys will have more similarities in height, but girls are more likely to be taller than the boys. In sixth form there will be greater differences between the heights of boys and girls and the boys are more likely to be taller. That there will be a much greater difference in the heights of boys between year 8 and sixth form than between the girls. I will attempt to show this by measuring the heights of boys and girls in year eight and the sixth form. In each case a sample size of fifty will be used in order to produce statistically valid results according to the central limit theorem. This will be done, by obtaining a sample that accurately represents each group. Firstly a list of boys and a list of girls in year eight and the sixth form will be formulated giving each student a number. Then a random number generator will be used to select fifty boys and fifty girls from each year group. I will measure the selected groups independently using the measuring device illustrated below. This device includes two, one meter rulers fixed against the wall, the mark for 0 cm is in line with the floor, and the second ruler is fixed alongside the first so that its 0 cm mark is in line with the firsts 100cm mark. Then two, 30cm rulers with millimetre measurements are fixed, one either side of the second meter ruler, at 140-170cm and 170-200cm, again the 0cm marks for each of these rulers were fixed in line with 140cm and 170cm respectively. This will help to ensure accurate measurements. Students will be asked to remove their shoes, stand up straight, flat on their feet, with their backs against the wall. The setsquare will be held against the wall and the individuals head. The height will be read and recorded. Each height will be measured to millimetres to ensure obtaining a reading that is as accurate as possible. The results were as follows. This will be done by adding together all of the heights in one group and dividing it by 50 (the sample size). This will be repeated for each of the remaining groups. This calculation is represented by the following formula. Next calculate the standard deviation, which is found by taking one group e.g. Year 8 boys and subtracting the mean from one of the scores. The result of this is squared. This is repeated for every score and the mean of the squared differences is worked out. This is the variance. To find the standard deviation you must square root the variance. This calculation is represented by the following formula. USEFUL BACKGROUND INFO THE CENTRAL LIMIT THEOREM If the sample size is large enough then the distribution of the sample means is approximately normal, irrespective of the distribution of the parent population. The mean of the distribution of the sample means is approximately equal to the parent population. The variance of the distribution of sample means is approximately the variance of the parent population divided by the sample size. These approximations get closer as the sample size gets bigger. These results are known as the Central Limit Theorem. Symbolically if, X ~ (unknown)(?, ?à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½) then ? n ~ (?, ?à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½/n) Provided n is sufficiently large. (n ? 30 is usually a good size). Standard error The standard deviation of the distribution of sample means is called the standard error. 1 s.e = ?à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½/n (variance of the distribution of x = ?à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½/n) In previous calculations I have only worked out the mean x and variance sà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ of my sample. I cannot calculate confidence intervals for population mean à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ because I do not know ?à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½. Unfortunately sà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ is not an unbiased estimator of ?à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ (i.e. the mean of the distribution of sà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ is not equal to ?à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½). However Is an unbiased estimator of population variance, and I can use this as an estimate of ?à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ when calculating standard error in order to produce confidence intervals for à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½. So in order to calculate the standard errors for each of my groups I must first calculate an estimate for ?à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½, using the above formulae. CALCULATIONS FOR THE ESTIMATES ?à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ AND STANDARD ERRORS I have previously calculated the mean (x) and standard deviation (sà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½) for each of my groups. I will now calculate an estimate for ?à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ in order to calculate the standard errors and formulate confidence intervals for each of my groups. To estimate ?à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ I will use the previously stated formula. And then using these estimates for ?à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ I will calculate the standard errors using the formula. CONFIDENCE INTERVALS If we have one sample mean x then P(à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ 1s.e x à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ + 1s.e), but this can be rearranged à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ 1s.e x x à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ + 1s.e == à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ x 1s.e à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ x + 1s.e So P(x 1s.e à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ x + 1s.e) = 0.68 I.e. There is a 68% chance that à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ lies within ? 1s.e of my x. This is known as a confidence interval for the population mean. In this investigation I am going to calculate confidence intervals for each of the individual groups. I am going to use 95% confidence intervals so I will have to calculate a z score for 95%. The z score is the number of standard deviations units away from the mean value. Using numerical methods, accurate tables have been constructed for the area under the normal curve. The table gives the area to the left of (or below) any given z- value. The area under the Standard normal curve that is to the left of z is denoted by ?(z).This is represented by the following diagram. I will obtain a z score for 95% as follows. The area to the left of the z = ?(z) = 0.95 + 0.25 = 0.975 Using the normal distribution table z = 1.96.This will be used in calculating the confidence intervals for each group. CALCULATIONS OF CONFIDENCE INTERVALS. Using my previous calculations for the z score for 95%, the mean of each sample and the standard errors. I will now formulate confidence intervals for each of my groups. YEAR EIGHT BOYS x = 154.1 s.e = 1.19 z score 95% = 1.96 (this will be used for all the groups) P(à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ 1.96s.e x à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ + 1.96s.e) = 0.95 P(x 1.96s.e à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ x + 1.96s.e) = 0.95 P(154.1 1.96 x 1.19 à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ 154.1 + 1.96 x 1.19) = 0.95 95% C.I for à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ is (151.8 156.3) . YEAR EIGHT GIRLS x = 158.3 s.e = 0.94 P(à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ 1.96s.e x à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ + 1.96s.e) = 0.95 P(x 1.96s.e à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ x + 1.96s.e) = 0.95 P(153.8 1.96 x 0.94 à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ 153.8 + 1.96 x 0.94) = 0.95 95% C.I for à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ is (156.5 160.1) SIXTH FORM BOYS x = 176.7 s.e = 1.08 P(à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ 1.96s.e x à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ + 1.96s.e) = 0.95 P(x 1.96s.e à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ x + 1.96s.e) = 0.95 P(176.7 1.96 x 1.08 à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ 176.7 + 1.96 x 1.08) = 0.95 95% C.I for à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ is (174.6 178.8) SIXTH FORM GIRLS x = 161.4 s.e = 0.99 P(à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ 1.96s.e x à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ + 1.96s.e) = 0.95 P(x 1.96s.e à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ x + 1.96s.e) = 0.95 P(161.4 1.96 x 0.99 à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ 161.4 + 1.96 x 0.99) = 0.95 95% C.I for à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ is (159.5 163.3) These results are represented by the following graphs. ANALYSIS OF RESULTS The first set of box plots shows the 95% confidence intervals for à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ for the year eight boys and the girls. They show that the majority of girls and boys in year eight are very similar in height, but girls are more likely to be taller. The second set of box plots shows the 95% confidence intervals for à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ for the sixth form boys and girls. They show that there is a great difference in the heights of the girls and boys, and it is the majority of boys that are taller. The third set of box plots shows the 95% confidence intervals for à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ for the boys in year eight and sixth form. They show that the majority of boys are a lot taller in the sixth form. The fourth set of box plots shows the 95% confidence intervals for à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ for the girls in year 8 and the sixth form the majority of girls in both years are much more similar in height than the boys. The majority of girls in sixth form are more likely to be taller. CONCLUSION AND ANALYSIS My results have shown my hypothesis to be correct. They show that: In year 8 girls and boys have more similarities in height, but girls are more likely to be taller than the boys. In sixth form there are greater differences between the heights of boys and girls and the boys are more likely to be taller. There is a much greater difference in the heights of boys between year 8 and sixth form than between the girls. I believe these results are fairly reliable, as I would say that I obtained my samples of girls and boys in year eight and the sixth form as accurately as I possibly could have given the facilities and amount of time that was available. I also think that using these samples I fairly accurately estimated the confidence intervals for the population mean of each group. I dont think there is much I could have done to improve the method of obtaining the sample or the method I used to measure the heights. The accuracy of my results would improve by using a larger sample size e.g. 100 girls and boys from each year group, according to the central limit theorem. However, this was not possible due to the amount of people available to measure and the amount of time allocated. I could have improved the sample further by taking groups of students from different schools in different areas, this may have given a more accurate representation of the population, as the ranges of heights in different areas for each group may be more varied. However this would have been very difficult to do and would have taken too long, also I dont think it would have shown any great difference in my findings, as the heights of boys and girls in each group throughout the region are most likely to be fairly similar to those I measured. If I had had more time it would have been interesting to find out where exactly the changes in the heights of boys and girls actually occurs. This could have been done by taking a sa mple of fifty girls and fifty boys from each of the years in between year eight and the sixth form, and again calculate confidence intervals to see when the boys go from being the same height or shorter than the girls to being much taller than them.

Management Appreciation - Essay Example The individual and team workers making up the functional departments get instructions from the supervisors heading a given task. The supervisors obtain detailed instructions from the department manager concerning the actions to be taken. A Matrix Structure PRESIDENT MANUFACTURING MARKETING PROCUREMENT FINANCE PRODUCT A PRODUCT B PRODUCT C One of a limited public company is Radient Pharmaceuticals Corporation, pharmaceuticals, and Biotechnology Company in the United States. This company operates with a matrix organizational structure. Matrix structure is the commonly used because of its advantages over other structures as argued by Baltes (2004 p.142). This structure works well for those companies operating in a dynamic business environment, like drugs and technological organization. Within Radient Corporation has categorized its personnel into both functional and product departments. A president, who is also the organization’s chief executive officer, heads the company. The ne xt rank of its management structure comprises of functional categories. These include the manufacturing department, finance department, human resource, procurement, research, development, and the marketing department. The next category comprises of product departments. This category is in the same rank with the functional departments. ... The different departments will coordinate their processes together in an effort to accomplish any goal. Within the team, each individual is assigned a distinctive role together with the expected results. Each team ought to complete their task within the given timeframe, after which the team leader will present the report to the relevant department manager. Based on this style of functioning, it is clear that Radient Corporation practices the task culture. The style of operation conforms to the Handy’s task culture, which defines it as a team-based result oriented culture. Matrix structure ensures effective integration of all the human resources of any given institution. It allows all the personnel to share ideas, hence improving performance and service delivery within a company. In matrix structure, the chain of command and lines of communication allows information to flow in a formal manner. This facilitates efficient sharing of information throughout the company. In addition , the task-teams result oriented culture facilitates motivation among the workers. Within a task team, each worker is assigned a role to play. The individual is expected to perform as per the set standards. This culture increases the aspect of accountability, hence increasing motivation and attitude among employees. Giunipero et al (2008) asserts that, business performance associated with Radient Corporation can be attributed to its management structure and work culture. The culture and the structure enhance a flexible working environment, hence improving the process of research and development within the company. One of the major factors that might affect Radient involves restrictions from authorities. This may affect the smooth management of the company, hence

Motivation in the Workplace - Essay Example The university consists mainly of five faculties’ namely engineering, science, humanities, built environment and business school. Deans are at the centres of each of these faculties. The department focused in the case is the engineering department which is composed mainly of the faculties with prior experience in the academics career. Most of the faculties have been in the university for around eight years. Another notable peculiarity of the department is that all the lecturers are males. The department has made notable efforts in creating an industry collaboration and several technology developed by the university has been patented. The protagonist of the case is Anne Henderson who is a notable professional in her industry. Changes in motivational factors are explained with the help of the story of her industrial behaviour and the changes in her career interest. Expansion plans of the university have resulted in them advertising for the post of senior lecturer. The preferred candidate for the post is an expert in the field with good experience in research work, good business contacts and having a willingness to travel. The case ends by referring to the state of mind of Anne Henderson where she comes across the vacancy at Midshires University and makes a call to the university without even looking at the instructions. Anne’s Motivating Factors This case study can be explained in terms of the content and process theories of motivation. For the purpose of the case study, two content and process theories will be considered. â€Å"Content theories explain the specific factors that motivate people. They explain what drives human behavior.† (Ferguson, 2000) Content theories specifically deal with needs and goals of individuals. Therefore, it deals with those factors that motivate individuals. The popular content theories are McGregor’s Theory X and Theory Y, ERG Theory, Herzberg’s Motivation-Hygiene Theory and McClelland’s Th eory of Needs. From the content perspective, Herzberg’s Motivation-Hygiene Theory and McClelland’s Need theory will be used to explain Anne’s motivating factors. â€Å"Process Theories deal with the â€Å"process† of motivation and is concerned with â€Å"how† motivation occurs.† (Ozgurzan, 2012) This is unlike the materialistic approach of content theory. Process theories state that any particular motivational behaviour of an individual is the result of an activity on the individual. Some of the popular process theories are Victor Vroom’s Expectancy Theory, Goal Theory and Adam’s Equity Theory. Vroom’s Expectancy Theory and Adam’s Equity Theory will be used here to explain Anne’s motivational situation. Herzberg’s theory of motivation states that an individual’s motivation level is influenced mainly by Hygiene Factors and Motivator Factors. Hygiene factors are those factors that are necessary for having a stable motivational level. The absence of these factors can lead to dissatisfaction of employees. But on the contrary their presence is not a motivator for the employees. Some of the hygiene factors are company policy, wages, supervisory quality, working conditions, job security, etc. Now, Anne’s motivation level can be analysed based on this theory. From the case study it can be seen that Anne was provided with an array of hygiene factors by the company. ?80,000 of annual salary, chauffeur-driven car, flat, pension scheme, credit cards and first class air travels were

Drug Abuse and Reprocussions Essay examples -- Substance Abuse Essays

Facing everyday problemsin these recent years many people turn to drugs as an escape from the existance they hold. Drug use has rapidly increased in the last twenty years and has become a national crises. More people are experementing with different drugs at a younger age. Due to the rapid increase in drug abuse our government has looked to rehab as an alternative to jail. When a person thinks of a drug abuser one usually pictures a person that looks like thay had just jumped out of a garbage bin. What most people do not realize is that most drug offenders are the people one spends a lot of time with. Everyday humans are abusing drugs without anyone recognizing their illness (Phillips 22). Many symptoms of drug abuse are easily recognisable. Weight loss or malnutrition are the most common, resulting when the drug abuser uses their money to pay for drugs rather than food. Exhaustion is associated with the end f a recent drug binge. Fever is caused when a stimulant or a hallucinogen increases the drug users metabolic rate. A skin flush usually accompanys the fever. Gooseflesh and sweating are associated with withdrawl and rashes, dilated pupils, and a runny nose are usually correlate with any drug use (Cohen 308-309). Along with these symptoms come the various different reprocussions affiliating themselves with each different drug taken. These results ra nge from headaches to death. With all the possible side effects one may wonder why people think drugs are worth all the trouble they are. Most people start out doing drugs to feel good or to fit in. Early users had easy access to medicine that made them physically dependent on that drug and others used drugs as an only escape from a hopeless existance (Compton’s 275). Teenagers experiment with drugs to find out about the world thay live in for themselves, to prove their self worth, and to experience as much as possible. They want to try something daring to prove their oun fearlessness, to have fun, act older, or to be accepted (Phillips 22). In the 1950’smore people af all classes and occupations began to use mood changing drugs both legally and illegally (Compton’s 275). These drugs were used to induce sleep and relaxation. Effects of Computer Essay

There is no doubt that technology has become a significant part of people’s lives nowadays. It has become a daily part of people’s routine whether it is at home or at the workplace. At this time, people, especially the young ones, are caught up with mobile phones, television sets, gaming consoles, music players, and other electronic gadgets. Many people cannot leave their houses without their mobile phones or music players. However, the technology that probably has the most effect on today’s society is the computer. Almost all households own a computer or a portable laptop, which is used for personal reasons. Throughout the world, companies utilize the computer to run their businesses. One of the effects that computers have made to society is the ability to communicate effortlessly. This is made possible through the use of other technologies including the Internet. People who are separated by long distances are now able to talk, send instant messages or emails with just a few clicks. There is no need to wait for days for a handwritten letter to arrive. People do not need to spend on long distance calls because computers would allow them to chat and view their loved ones over the Internet. Indeed, computers have crossed the gap that distance has made. â€Å"The ability to communicate across cultures, across national boundaries, relatively quickly, and with unfettered freedom of speech has forever changed the way in which people live† (Odom, 2004, p. 25). Computers did not only made communication between loved ones easier but also, it made communication among colleagues and workers much easier. A large amount of papers is saved everyday because employees do not have to print documents and letters all the time. Now that computers and networking are available, employees only need to send emails or instant messages for informal documents or exchange of information. The Internet also made possible for companies to manage their businesses overseas. This saves them the time, money, and effort when going to and from different work places. The most important effect that computer has brought to society is the ease of gathering information from the Internet. People do not have to go to libraries to research for their schoolwork or projects at work. They do not have to travel to places just to see what these places have to offer because the Internet has all the information about the world that they need. There is no excuse to be ignorant because even if the Internet is not available, there are compact discs in the market, which contains variety of information much like an encyclopedia. However, it is important to indicate that not everything is positive when it comes to computers’ effects on society. Research has shown that â€Å"a quarter of five-year-olds have Internet access in their bedroom and around half of teenagers had access in theirs, spending an average of 2. 2 hours a day on social networking sites† (Ager, 2009). The large amount of time they spend and the amount of exposure they have on computers and other technological devices is compromising their reading and communication skills, which may compromise their future as professional adults. Computers have proved to become very useful innovation in today’s society. One cannot imagine life at this time without the help of computers and the Internet. Its effects are not only felt inside the house but also at business sites and educational institutions, and almost everyone is affected by it either directly or indirectly. However, people should also realize that just like any other thing, relying too much on computers could also have its disadvantages. As such, while using the computer and other technologies is inevitable, people must also learn how to distance themselves from it and learn how to do simple things without the use of technology. Assessment Reflection Essay examples - 953 Words

As I reflect on my past assessment process, I realized how much my assessments have changed over the years. In my early years, I used tests for informational recall as my assessments. I felt these were appropriate guidelines in which I needed to follow in order to substantiate a student’s grade. Every assignment or tests was given a point value and then based on the amount of points, a grade was given. Every student’s assessment was exactly the same, and the assessments did not contain any subjectivity. I felt confident in giving the grade based on a valid point system. However reflecting back, I see that I did not include any performance-based assessments or individual learning styles in my early assessment. I also did not take†¦show more content†¦Part of my assessment philosophy is to assess students on a daily basis which also includes their reaction to my class. Students come to school with so much baggage that if you only chose one day a week, or four or five times a marking period to assess them, chances are, they may be having a bad day. Therefore, these students may not demonstrate their true ability if given only a few attempts during the marking period. Assessment needs to be a continuous process throughout the marking period. Everyday my students are given an opportunity to demonstrate their learning whether it is an observation, a quick answer or a one-on-one discussion or a group project. My assessments are consistent, flexible and achievable. I adhere to the deadlines that I give my students as part of my assessment process. I want to infuse in my students that the world has deadlines, and you must be prepared to meet them. Assessment for many students means failure instead of demonstrating what you know. Too many students walk away from a test, a science lab, or any other learning experience and feel as if they have failed. Students should walk away from these experiences with a feeling of curiosity. If assessments are correctly used, students would want to experiment more and take additional risks knowing that the end result would be a feeling of achievement instead of failure.
